While the submersion of wellheads and wellhead electrical equipment is not desirable, BIW Connector Systems' connectors are designed to seal out water should the connectors become fully immersed in water. For optimal resistance of flooding, it is important that connectors are fully engaged at the time of installation. The Red Dot must be covered and the coupling ring must be tight.
The highest reliability can only be attained by replacement of systems at time of work-over. However, it is common for operators to re-use Surface Connectors and Feedthrus, if these items are in good condition and have been thoroughly cleaned and tested. The repeated use of lower connectors is not recommended. BIW recommends that wellhead feedthrus and surface connectors should not be re-used more than three time or more than five years., whichever comes first.
Connectors from different manufacturers must never be intermated. Manufacturers do not share dimensional and torance engineering data, and there is no assurance that proper sealing and proper electrical operation will occur when connectors from different sources are mated. In addition, approvals from third party agencies are invalid if connectors are not used with their proper mating item.
